FWIW
Definitions from basic science as taught in Jr. High (now called
"middle school" AKA 7th & 8th grade).

Hypothesis - a speculation regarding a physical process based on
objective observation.

Theory - A hypothesis that has been tested and found to conform to the evidence.

Note: As used by scientists the word "theory" is NOT synonymous with
"guess" as opponents of global warming, evolution, (you name it) are
fond of implying. To suggest that a scientific theory is merely a
guess displays a total ignorance of how science works. Even a
hypothesis has more basis than a guess because it is based on
objective observation not personal bias.
