Mountaintown Creek / Pinhoti Trail, 11-13 August 2006

about 10 creek crossings, 5 of them required sandals to avoid wetting your
boots!

This was a trail called "Mountaintown Creek Trail" and it just so happens
the Pinhoti joins it about half way through . . .

It's in the southern end of the Cohutta Wilderness. We hiked in and out:
southbound in ...

First day, Friday 11 Aug: we arrived late and walked about two miles
downhill to a camp site maybe 2 tenths of a mile beyond the falls.

I brought a frozen sag gost curry for the first night . . . Phil brought
some spiced rum . . .

The next day, because of the potential for rain, we decided to day hike to
the southern end of the trail and return to the same camp, about 7 miles
round-trip . . . it did rain, and we were glad for a dry place to sleep. We
met but a single pair of trout fishermen who had day hiked to the gorge
below our campsite . . .

There are some short, strenuous climbs, northbound. One's through the gorge
to where we camped; the other at the northern end at the switch back where
the trail leaves the creek and heads to FS 64.

Phil's dog, Ketchup, kept the bears out of sight. We saw grouse, a squished
frog, lots of mushrooms, turkey, trout, a largish garden snake,
butterflies, deer and heard lots of birds . . .
