GDog,
I am TRYING to get back into "Real Runner" shape for
the first time since 2003, and while I have kept up a
modicum of conditioning since then (even running some
ultras and such), I have let go of alot, *especially*
in the speed department. Right now, I'm trying to ease
into things with 1) Soccer coaching (them SmallBoys
are now playing on a full size field!), 2) ultimate
frisbie (soccer without having to kick), and 3) real
"running" -- first since the tiny little bit in
April/May.

To make a long story short, for months I've let the
running go, let the vitamins go, and have let the
Glucosamine go, and I FEEL LIKE CRAP. My muscles ache,
my joints go "crunch", my energy is close-to-nil. Man,
this "Growing old ain't for Wimps" thing is SO real.
(I mean, CRIMINY! My WRIST hurts! Whu???)

The other day, on a two mile "run", I stopped every
two hundred yards to stretch out my quads so's my
knees would not ACHE. (Admittedly, by the time I
finished the second mile, and was more fully warmed
up, I wasn't stopping at all. THAT'S my goal -- "fully
warmed up.") The next day, I ran for about an hour,
and felt ferociously good, even through the next day.
Yesterday, I limped all day cuz my hip flexor (a new
"injury" which appears to come out of the blue) was so
painfully tight my belly button wiggled when I raised
my knee. Today, things be much better.

SO!
I is back with my friend Glucosamine.
I'm dropping AT LEAST a multi a day; when I ramp my
mileage up a bit, I'll go back with an additional
daily C, E, Omega3, SAMe, and when on a big run, add
Chromium Picolinate, BComplex, and some other 'stuff.'
And I'm back to stretching and "warming up" and paying
some dang attention to the dynamic reality that is a
body completely out of adjustment and "tuning." There
are 3-4 different aches I get when this muscle or that
joint are tight or tired or overworked, and
boy-and-howdy, right now I GOTS 'EM ALL. Time to
STRETCH the warm (WARM) muscles.

SO! (So!)
Hit the vitamins. Be patient. Give your bod time to
warm up to whatever task you're asking of it. Gout in
particular will play hell with you -- games that have
rule changes from one day to the next. Pardon the
expression but,

Just be flexible.
