One thing you do not want to do if you're hiking in killer bee country is try to find water. Africanized bees settle next to water sources in the desert and viciously guard this valuable resource.

Another thing you don't want to do is hike into a box canyon or other area where you can't escape quickly. If you're down in a ravine or box canyon that's littered with huge boulders and a killer bee colony attacks, you're dead.

As to beekeepers not bringing in African colonies into populated areas, what people are supposed to do and what greed motivates them to do are two separate things. Like lurker said, killer bees have certain advantages. Not everyone is a Lutheran minister or has taken vows of poverty, these clandestine colonies that swarm and get away from the unscrupulous keeper probably explains some of the deaths in highly urbanized areas like Los Angeles.

One more thing. Africanized bees have been moving north since 1959 and have not found the northern limits of their territory yet. Just like imported fire ants that have been moving north and adapting to colder climates, killer bees may soon be in a tree or attic near YOU even if you live in Kentucky or Connecticut.

For dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
