Kyrie Eleison! What a perfectly perfect hiking story perfectly turned,
not in the particulars of your sparse sentences so much as in their
accumulation conjuring such a soulful mood. The tone of this is
exactly how it feels to be in communion with the implacably harsh,
humbling, exalting, artful beauty of the natural world that holds us,
launches us in our natural orbit, and ultimately claims us; the only
price required, our presence. And who hasn't come up on the "Cincinnati
Boys" at a campsite after a day of euphoric hiking? Your lightness and
humor here makes the scene. Finally, after the last stanza in your
paean to the hiker's way, you drive home the point with a simple
declaration of perfect solitude. If you have eyes to see and ears to
hear, the solitary gifts are immeasurable. It feels eternal, like
salvation. Well done. You should write more.
