Not really. I think it was "Rabe" who said this is entirely
"on-topic" for the AT. That's why I keep emphasizing MacKaye. He clearly meant for the
AT to be a place where consciousness of this exact thing was a main part of
its existence. I believe if MacKaye ever thought his creation would end up
being reduced to "this is off-topic on a hiking list" he would have quit the
project and formed a wilderness society - Hey wait! err, that's exactly what he
did...
Bless those who aren't afraid to see the AT as it was meant. That
is, a place to form a border excluding that rationalization. Where nature comes
first - no excuses or calls for off-topic. If people are going to ravage
nature, it's important not to put the reflexive civil view to it. It's appropriate
to call it what it is. Just like if people are going to try to reduce the AT
to a "hiking list" or lunch chat board.
