So here I sit, an academic hiking dork, and I'm thinking ahead to 
Pittsburgh's excellent event,

hosting a talk about the state of research and academe as regards 
backpacking.  Now, I can yammer on about various things, but I figure it'd
be more fun for all if I covered a short range of topics about which 
people are actually interested. 

Any suggestions?  The use of hiking poles, exotic invasives, the 
psychology of trailside and trailhead signs?
