One thing still to be said for mail drops:

I like to hike with maps. Not so much for navigation, the blazes are for 
that, but for enjoyment and to study the land forms along the Trail. You 
can walk off most trail maps in a hurry. Does anyone know a better way 
to "resupply" maps than maildrops? Not too many delis sell trail maps.
