Nine years ago tonight, Pokey and I were in Stratton, ME.  We had dinner 
at the White Wolf (?) and stayed in the attached motel. A transvestite 
sat at the table next to us. Beorn sat outside. He tried to yogi a stay 
in our room, but his annoying personality made that undesirable to me.  
I called my grandfather, recently passed, from the payfone in the foyer 
of the restaurant. We talked about the hike. He said, "Boy, that sounds 
like fun."  I called my sister, who was staying at my house and taking 
car of things for me. She said "I killed your cat."   WEll, she didn't 
really say that. She said something to the affect that my old buddy, 
Elmer, had been missing for a few days.  He was a pretty cool cat.   

9 years ago tomorrow morning, we got a ride back to the trail with a 
drunk man with a beautiful 7 year old daughter with him.  I felt very 
sorry for the sweet little thing.   

(Hmmm....9+7=16....)
