[at-l] Measuring Wheels

Yes I have wheeled over 600 miles of trails in the last 2-3 years. (Also
GPSed them at the same time).
We use a Rolatape model 623 wheel. GPS and wheel do not measure the same
thing. On a paved bike path they agree pretty well, on rocky, twisty trails
the GPS is typically 10% low. The wheel measurement corresponds better to
hiking effort. Using a map measurer typically gets you numbers that are at
least 20% low. It is all about the distances you are averaging over with the
various devices. If you used a map measurer with its 1/8 inch wheel on a
trail you would be going up and over every grain of sand and get a huge
number of miles.
