Back in the day, it meant a hiking with a lighter than typical pack.

Now it means hiking w/o a pack (or w/o a full backpack) while someone shuttles 
you (or your gear) to and from trailhead to trailhead; or to and from  to a 
hostel, motel, etc. or dayhiking the trail. or part of it.
