Hi, everyone--

I've been a lurker on this list for several years, but
now I need some information and advice. Several years
ago I hiked from Amicalola Falls to Dicks Creek Gap,
and now I want to continue north to Fontana Dam. I
will probably need to go to Franklin, NC for supplies
along the way.

I can go either in mid-August or early September. I
might be able to go in October, but I'm concerned with
nighttime temperatures in the mountains that late. My
bag is rated to 20 degrees, but I've never tried it
much lower that about 30.

I plan to drive from southern Indiana to Fontana Dam,
leave my pickup there somewhere, arrange a shuttle to
Dicks Creek Gap, and hike back from there. I've
ordered a copy of "Thru-Hikers' Companion" from the
ATC, but I haven't received it yet. I have the old
maps from my previous hike.

Given the above dates, when is likely to be the most
favorable time to make my hike? Any suggestions and
advice concerning a shuttle, a place to leave my
pickup at Fontana Dam, etc. will be welcome and
appreciated. What about water?

Thanks,
Oakleigh Westfall
Slow but Sure
