"The non-hiking husband would sometimes visit the wife on the trail, and pretend her lover was just a friend."

Dust, what the hell does that mean? The way you wrote it, it sounds like the husband would pretend that his wife's lover was just her friend. Maybe he just wanted to get along, so he ignored the obvious?

I believe you meant to say that the non-hiking husband would sometimes visit his wife on the trail, and she would pretend that her lover was just a friend. If you're going to criticize people, at least don't be a grammar slut.

Brings to mind a story I heard about what happened on the AT a few years ago. Seems there was this married woman who developed a "friendship" with a male hiker. It turned into more than a friendship and was no secret on the trail. The non-hiking husband would sometimes visit the wife on the trail, and pretend her lover was just a friend. Other hikers began to despise this cheating wife, and eventually someone ratted her out to her husband. As you can predict, that marriage ended in divorce shortly thereafter.
