Bear attacks Frederick woman in Romania

  A Frederick [MD] woman was among a group of U.S.
tourists attacked by a bear in Romania on Saturday.

Sara McKelvey, 26, was injured by the bear, which
killed one woman and injured another man.

Calls to her parents' Frederick home went unanswered
Tuesday.

McKelvey was in Romania with five other people,
hiking in the Carpathian Mountains about 75 miles
north of Bucharest, according to Romanian police.
The group spotted a brown bear and chased it away.

The bear returned, first attacking McKelvey. As the
other tourists threw stones, the bear bit a man
before mauling a 31-year-old woman to death.

Details on McKelvey's condition and the identities
of the victims are unknown.

She is believed to have been in Romania working
with the Romanian Family Health Inititiative, a
humanitarian program funded by the Boston-based
JSI Research & Training Institute.
