[at-l] A Wee Bit of Wind History of My Own

I think I would very much would like to join the Mt. Washington weather
observatory crew . . . enjoyed David Addleton’s recent post re Mt.
Washington’s weather observatory history . . . made me think of my own crazy
habit of chasing hurricanes around . . . two years ago, Hurricane Ophelia
kissed the NC outer banks in our neck of the woods, and my friend Greg Rose
and I had to set out and see what we could get ourselves into . . . to make
a longer story shorter, I clocked close to 125 mph at the apex of the 75+
foot high NC Highway 58 bridge over to Emerald Isle while hanging on for
dear life in my Toyota Tundra truck. I will never forget those sounds,
which I also was able to record on videotape . . . Greg and I now have
experienced so many hurricanes since Bertha came thru New Bern in 1996 that
I was beginning to get a bit jaded about it all – that fateful evening up on
the 58 bridge changed all that – damn near peed in my pants . . . I think it
is some primal desire to connect to the wildest in nature, along with plain
stupidity, that keeps me coming back for more, but no way I want to walk (or
crawl) around in 150+ mph, or anything else higher than that 124 mph
experience, I can tell you that!
