Ah, but the "rest of the story" is that the newcomer decides to give it a try and so calls out "62" and is met by stoney silence.  He asks the other inmate "what's the problem, isn't that joke funny?"  The inmate replies, "I guess you just don't know how to tell a joke".

heard, know and love, but telling em takes too
long, so we just call out the number of the
jokes, instead."
