Thanks for the input! I generally prefer an external frame pack. But for this use I thought I would try an internal frame/no frame. My target hikes are some short 2/3 days in the southwest this coming year. Thanks for the tip about water bottle carry pockets.

Backpacks are individual; that is obvious. But what do YOU like? The Tent and Sleeping bag can be hung on the outside of almost any pack. Just make sure that there are places to tie them to when choosing a pack. Also it is good to have places to keep water bottles on the outside of the pack. Then, you have the whole inside to put your other gear, clothing, food, etc., so that you have a compact and complete pack.

Stretch assumes that you do not want an exterior framed pack but there are advantages to one, even though those can be a bit noisy. The big advantage I see is the ability to hang one from almost anywhere; also the access to multiple points of attaching "stuff" to an EF pack.

But even if an EF is not your bag, there are many variations to choose from with an IF bag or even a Day Pack. A day pack, if it has attachment points, can provide enough room for a short hike 1-3 days out and back.

The best thing to do is to go to a supplier and see what is there and then to talk to the salespersons. If there is a lot of time to make a choice then perhaps renting various packs to give them a try-out would be prudent.
