That link is very interesting.  The number of starters goes down but  
the percentage of finishers goes up, and more people are making it to  
each waypoint.

I interpret this to mean that people are more prepared, maybe.   
Perhaps the fewer starters means that the completely unprepared  
realize it and stay home.  They probably read a wikipedia article  
that made them realize it wasn't their thing after all.
