When I was a kid our phone # was 2013. The neighbor toward town was 2012 and
the neighbor on the other side was 2014. If you wanted to call anyone on
that road you just counted ow many houses away they were and added or
subtracted that from our number depending on the direction. Everyone was on
8 party lines. When the phone rang everyone's rang. You told who it was for
by how many rings. No area codes, no exchange, just a 4 digit number.
