I'm just a lurker on the list, but this has been an interesting thread.  I've been a member since 01, and this year when the renewal came in, I weighed it over and over in my mind.  For the same reasons that have been mentioned here.  And I decided not to renew this year.  Note that...this year.  I'll pay attention and see what happens.  I want to go back, but right now it wasn't my top priority.  Things have changed.  I don't think not joining for a year means you aren't a part of it.  We give to other trail organizations, both AT and local trails/land trusts.  And of course pack out trash as we find it.  IMO ATC has made changes that, while I understand, I don't care for.  I hope it works out, and it may, but in the meantime it was time for me to take a break.
