Subject: [at-l] Message from new owner of Trailplace

As of October 11, I acquired the Trailplace website and the Thru-hiker's Handbook from Dan "Wingfoot" Bruce. Dan decided to retire this year, and did not want to continue operating Trailplace or the Handbook. I felt there was considerable value in both the website and guidebook, so I approached him about taking over the operation and we were able to reach an agreement.

The 2008 Thru-hiker's Handbook will have a lot of updated information, and will be in a very similar format to the 2007 edition. I am currently traveling the path of the AT by road to gather first-hand information about services near the trail. This trip and the subsequent work necessary to prepare the book for publication will probably occupy most of my energies until the end of November.

Shortly thereafter, I hope to start reviving the Trailplace website. I hope to make it a place where it easy to exchange information about hiking the AT. I also hope to post information to supplement the Thru-hiker's Handbook and other articles of interest to AT hikers.

I plan to moderate the forums gently so they don't suffer from some of the typical diseases of unmoderated forums -- animosity, irrelevance, and so forth. On the other hand, I welcome opinions different from my own and I promise never to delete a respectfully stated post just because I differ with the poster.

I will try to get the word out when I am able to get Trailplace off the ground, probably some time in December.

  Bob "501" McCaw
