here's the text of the obituary in the Augusta, Maine newspaper, the 
Kennebec Journal, published on 9/6/2007:


MOUNT VERNON -- Deane Ernest Jones, 69, of Wings Mills Road died 
unexpectedly on Sept. 3, 2007, at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a 
brief illness.

He was born in Waterville on June 30, 1938, the first son of Robert 
Buck and Doris (Willette) Jones. Deane graduated from Waterville High 
School in the class of 1956, and later from the University of Maine at 
Orono. He served in the Air Force and Maine Air National Guard from 
1961 to 1967 and achieved the rank of Captain. He was employed by J.S. 
McCarthy Printers in Augusta until his retirement in 2000.

He had recently been elected to serve in the 123rd Legislature for 
District 83, representing Manchester, Fayette, Belgrade, Mount Vernon, 
and Vienna. He served the community of Mount Vernon as selectman for 
many years. In 2000, he accomplished a personal quest: to hike the 
Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. In his retirement, he enjoyed 
traveling with his wife Pat, and had recently returned from a trip to 
China and Tibet. His love for his family was unwavering, and he was an 
exceptional husband and father.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia (Rollins) Jones; two brothers, Robert 
Bruce Jones of Mount Olive, N.C., and Howard Jones of Oakland; two 
sons, Patrick Bruce Jones of Chicago and Michael Deane Jones of 
Farmington; and one granddaughter.

A memorial Mass celebrating Deane's life will be held at 1 p.m. on 
Friday, Sept. 7, at St. Mary's of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, 
Western Avenue, Augusta, with the Revs. Ralph Boisvert, celebrant, and 
Sylvio Levesque, concelebrant. A separate reception will be held from 1 
to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Augusta Country Club in 
Manchester; all are welcome to join.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Deane's memory may be made to the 
Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care, P.O. Box 828, Waterville, ME 
04903-0828. Arrangements are in the care of Knowlton & Hewins Funeral 
Home and Cremation Service, 1 Church St., Augusta.
