You
May remember hearing about the big tree smashing Pine Swamp
shelter (about 20 north of Pearisburg, VA). The hikers staying there
were not hurt but they felt the earth move. The shelter is only about a
1/4 mile from a parking area on Stony Creek road. The shelter has an
open front and a fireplace inside. You turn off 460 heading towards
White Rocks to get there. If you keep going towards Pain Bank the road
goes along the eastern side of Peters mountain in Virginia. On the west
side of the mountain you would be in West Virginia. If you cross the
mountain near the Waitsville turnoff you go right by the Hanging Rock
Raptor Observatory. Its only .7 mile walk to the observatory which is an
official shelter for the Allegheny Trail. 360* views, I have seen F-15's
fly below and to fly even with the shelter. It is also quite a ride in a
thunderstorm. My PC background at work is a picture of this shelter.
So you know if anyone wanted to come out and help work on
the Pine Swamp shelter.... your help is needed and now you know about
some other interesting things to see in the area. You could work on Pine
Swamp and sleep in the sky. http://ratc.org

Chase,
We have a big weekend of work scheduled for Oct. 4&5 for the Pine
Swamp Shelter. I hope that we will finish the roof then or at least come
close. We will need lots of help. It should definitely be done long
before spring. Nothing new on our trail south of Pearisburg.
                    Charles Parry
