When an embedded tick is smothered with soap or petroleum jelly it secretes
its saliva to work its mouth parts out to escape the goo and thus injects the
bite site with whatever germs like Lyme it might be carrying. Physically
removing the tick straight out mechanically is less likely to cause this
response.

It should. What you are trying to do is smother the tick. liquid soap would
do that. The cotton ball keeps the soap concentrated over & around the tick.
A gob of petroleum jelly would work too. The time is a bit short according
to what I've read. It's more like 10 minutes.

A friend sent me the tick removal method copied below. Has anyone tried
this and did it work?

"Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the
soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds
(15-20), after which the tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the
cotton ball when you lift it away. "
