Hiking on the AT this time of year, this place (Pearisburg), has a variety of
conditions. My first few day hikes in the Dismal Falls to New River section
were on mild days with temps in the 40's, soft ground even at the near-4000
foot elevation on the ridge. A quick 2 days later we had a couple of inches of
snow in that same location. Wednesday I hiked from the Trent's grocery store
trailhead (rt 606) heading S carrying a half-filled pack. As I approached the
ridge the wind sounded like a freight train approaching me. I pulled out the
extra fleece and wind gear and headed into the winds. Temp was around 25 but
felt like 5 below zero, the trail was frozen solid with a thin layer of snow
on top of ice.

Today I'm heading to Wind Gap to do a 6 mile loop with the War Spur trail.
That is, if I can navigate the dirt road from Mountain Lake to the trailhead.
Temps are in the 30's here at the Library.

btw, the trail register at rt 606 has had 3 entries since early December. One
was a southbound thruhiker, sorry I didn't write down the name.

Next hikes are Sat/Sun overnight in the Grayson Highlands. Hi to
all! --RockDancer
