People tend to judge wages, prices, etc. by their personal experience. BLS
figures OTOH are averages. If you live in LA, Houston or NYC you could
easily get the impression that wages were higher than the actual average.
We've all heard about NYC garbage collectors making $80K (not sure there's
any truth to that) and the news likes to quote gas prices above $5/gal but
those are isolated figures. Prices don't go up evenly across the board. For
example the average car now costs disproportionately more than other things
because of all the added pollution and safety technology. My 1st car, a 1962
Buick Invicta convertible, didn't even have seat belts.

Here's an inflation figure for you Art: In all of the 1960's only 37 people
became 2000 milers. In 2006 (the most recent year with completed reports on
the ATC website) 488 completed 2000 miles. Now is gas prices had gone up in
relation to that... OTOH I don't even want to calculate what that would be
but I'm sure it's pretty close to Sky's $30 estimate.
