Thanks for the advice Clyde. Hope your hike goes better this time around.....

I am an experienced?ultra runner & hiker/climber having summited Mt. Rainer & Washington (in February). So, I am coming from a well maintained base of endurance. In fact, I am running the Nipmuck Trail Marathin June 1st and starting the AT on June 2nd.

That said, one must always respect the trail and take precautions. I always err on the side of safety.

I'll keep an eye out for you that week.....

Ron

I am starting June 4th.? I went in 2006 and broke my leg.? Do not underestimate the difficulty of Katahdin.? Most reports are from folks that have hiked a long ways before they climb it.? It is hard.

Glad to hear NH is welcoming spring.

My concern is up in Baxter. I've planned for a June 2nd start on my first 10 day section hike to begin my "rest-of-my-life" section hike of the AT.

>From all I've been reading on Whiteblaze, I may need to postpone?my start a year and plan for a later in?the summer start.

Sure hope the next 3 weeks are warm up north.....

Ron

I almost made it raking off the pine needles from my lawns before the
black flies came out in force. We can usually plan on them between
Mother's Day and Father's Day. Sure enough they are swarming in
central NH now. I would give them a couple of weeks before they
infiltrate the mountains to drive hikers out of their minds. While I
was raking on Tuesday a waterskier showed up out on the lake. Water
temperature is around 40 degrees so I am sure the skier hustled to
get out of the water after his/her ride. It must have been great for
the skier because there was no other boat on the lake. It looked
like a mirror out on the water with the Belknap Mountains reflecting
from the opposite shore. I don't think there will be any water
skiing today because the temperatures are in the 40's and there is a
steady wind blowing from the north. The wind helps control the black
flies but makes it difficult to finish my raking. However, it would
be a good day for a hike.
