A late start and only 8 miles to go after doing laundry, mail drop, repack and a
last minute visit to Applewood. Finally got on the trail at 3:30 PM and blazed
across the hills by sunset, legs on strong energy.

Dizzy B is here with soda, beer and stories about the last 4 years here, how she
began slacking her cousin and then started bringing water to this spot for
hikers. She also had photos of all the '97 hikers I met last year so we told
tales back and forth until 10 PM. She's about 50, drinks and smokes, seems bored
with regular life and gets depressed when the hikers aren't here. Hikers have
become her life. She also works at gardening and odd jobs to keep going.

Best part of the day was the tour of Applewood Farm. 15 acres, 10 men & women,
lots of vision and ideas from the guy named Jim. I sat on the river beach and
chatted about living simply & cheaply, bartering and the connections it brings
between people. It's hard to leave these people - my fantasy is to return and
make bread for them.

(At this point Felix is roughly 45 miles behind me. I finally get out of
Hanover, NH on Sept. 16 and Felix & I are more or less together from perhaps
Winturri Shelter (not sure of this) to Bennington Rt. 9 - for about 110 miles.
Unfortunately my notes aren't complete for this section. I have a great photo of
Patch, Stoat, Felix, Pokey and Mike Henderson in Manchester Center on 9/22 (I
think) and a note that the same pack along with Stoat, Tripper, Soy Boy & Road
Hazard were with me at Melville Nauheim Shelter on 9/25. After that I slowed
down and reached N. Adams for a bus connection to Pipestem, WV for the Gathering
on 10/7.)
