Clyde,
Yes, you got the hikes right. In '98 I was a little lost, no work, wandering
around the US, then I got the idea that I had rushed through the 100-mile
Wilderness the previous fall, wouldn't it be nice to see it in warmer weather,
and to take as much time as I needed. Warning: one should only embark on these
things knowing it can become something else!

Well, in '97 I took 6 days from Monson to Katahdin Stream campground. In '98 the
same stretch took 16 days. I met some wonderful people (as I do on every trip)
and by the time I reached Monson I felt at home on the trail. But I had
obligations that had to be met by the end of '98 and I couldn't continue south
after getting to Williamstown, MA. I had time enough to take in the Gathering,
and even met Stitches there; she was kind enough to give me a ride back to Mass
after the Gathering.

What a wonderful story to hear about, even this many years later. I'm not
surprised at your kindness though. Some others have said they are enjoying the
two views of the same hike during the section where I met Felix & Dizzy & Earl &
The Family all on the same hike. --RD

Did you go north in 97 and then south in 98? In 97 a cousin was dying in
California. His family had disowned him. My wife and I went out there and
stayed with him, his last three weeks. (My wife is a Nurse) I was following your
journal on wingfoots site. I read it to him. You were in the whites and
southern Maine while we were out there. I remember him joking and telling me
you had better hurry up or he wasn't gonna make it for you to finish. He didn't
but you did :>)) When you started posting this I didn't pay any attention to
the date. It took me till now to figure out you were gpoing the wrong way.

"Easy hiking got me here by noon so I napped a bit, ate some Ben & Jerry's,
found Robinson Hall, email at Baker Hall, then here at Alpha-Theta house. Lots
of messages for me to answer. I have time I'm going to stay here until Monday.
Dinner at the Brick & Brew with a woman named Conjo, she's northbound. Also here
is a southbounder named Potato Chip, Road Hazard too. Went to the Dartmouth
Co-op for some socks and skewer pegs.

I'm not sure what Road Hazard is thinking, perhaps he's trying to get away from
me. But there's been no explanation regarding his 24-mile hike. He made the PO
this morning, but since it was only 8 easy miles today, so could I if I wanted.
In general the hiker talk is boring me, I'd rather talk with locals. An
alpha-theta alumnus is visiting here from Colorado, staying with us. So we
talked about the new AMC digital mapping project. This guy helped Larry Garland
on the project at AMC."

With Felix slowing down he's now either 55 or 63 miles back of me, 10 miles
further than 4 days ago. --RD
