Subject: [at-l] Twas the Night Before Christmas (A. T. Version)

Twas the night before Christmas, when along the A. T.
ot a creature was stirring, not even a bee.
he food bags were hung by the shelters with care,
n hopes that the mini-bears wouldn't find them there.
The hikers were nestled all snug in their bags,
nd hammocks were hung with just the right sag.
nd Wolf in a 'boggan, Jack with a nightcap,
ad just settled down for a long winter’s rap.
When out in the woods there arose such a clatter,
ven Blister sprang up to see what was the matter.
way to the privy, Rock flew like a flash,
ore open the door and let out a blast.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
ave the luster of mid-day to objects below.
hen, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
ut a big momma bear, and three wee tiny peers.
She looked at the food bags, hung oh so high,
hen she spied Wolf's tent, his food bag was nigh.
ore rapid than eagles she near to Wolf came,
hen she smelled Wolfie's socks; away she then sprang!
'Wonder! Rock Dancer! Hammock Hanger and Blissful!
rolicking Dinos! RedHat! HikerHead and Hopeful!
heltowee, Waterfall and new little Scout!
he bears they dispatched with thunderous shout!
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
he bears scampered off, no more food bags to try.
o back to their sleeping bags, the hikers they flew,
ith tummies full of GORP, and spring water too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
he prancing and pawing of mini-bear hoofs.
s I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Cross my face came the mini-bear with a mighty bound.
She was dressed all in fur, from her head to four feet,
nd her whiskers were all tarnished with ramen and DEET.
smidgen of peanut butter clung to her back,
nd she looked quite proud to have found Wolfie's backpack.
Her eyes-how they twinkled! her whiskers did twitch!
s Wolf exclaimed, "Gonna kill dat son o' a b**ch!
er droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
nd the beard of Wolf's chin was growing to lengths seen in old.
The toe of a boot he held tight in his hand,
nd he whacked and he whacked, putting dents in the land
he mouse, she just smiled and Pirate awakened,
nd we all wished the name 'Dances with Mice' wasn't taken!
She was chubby and plump, we hikers fed her well,
nd laughter was heard coming from A.W.O.L.!
wink of her eye and a twist of her head,
nd off she ran with a piece of Wolf's bread.
Wolf spoke not a word, but went straight to his pack,
nd filled it all up, and slung it up on his back.
e bid adieu to hikers so dear
nd said "No wonder I've not been to a shelter in years'!
He sprang to the trail, to his Gypsy gave a wink,
own the blue blaze he flew like the Missing Kink.
ut I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he hiked out of sight,
Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"
