I've never been known to count ounces, really. Though, as I get older
and the body hurts more after less, I try to not carry weight I don't
have to. But, I don't like to give up some comforts and luxuries. Like
the 19 ounce can of Progresso Beef Stew I carried to Upper Goose Pond
last February. I carried it with the intention of eating it that night
on the porch of the cabin. But, that sandwich I'd eaten at the deli
where I bought the stew had me full for the night. (A night it got into
the single digits...which made it a clear, beautiful sunrise the next
morning.) So, I carried that pound-plus can of glorious meaty-nectar
with me all day long...to a cold, damp, fogged-in South Wilcox Mt.
Shelter. Mmmmm....probably the second-best meal I've ever had on the
trail. (This was the night that I was lying in my sleeping bag (after
eating) and thinking "This is a pretty dumpy shelter" only to find out
when I went to the privy the next morning that there is a brand-spanking
new shelter about 75 yards from the old one. (That's how thick the fog
was.) Mmmmm.....hamburger rocks.
