[at-l] Ride, ride, ride, Let ride...

I just got home from a wonderful little bike ride. I met another cyclist 
and we rode together for a while.  At some point, he said, I think, that 
you will burn more calories riding on flat land than you will riding in 
hills. Is this true? If so, why?  Because the 'work' and effort is more 
constant?
