My problem with Overmountain Shelter, and I've stayed there three times, is that it's awful in bad weather.  In nice weather, nothing could be finer, but the first time I stayed there was a nasty, rainy night with fog swirling all around.  I hung my clothes near the fire, and, in the morning, they were wetter than when I had taken them off.  A coyote passed through early in the morning.  Truly ugly.  It's just down the road from me here.  a'bear
