When did Ed Garvey publish his book?  The first edition..

  This question is sort of for Earthworm but others might have info as well.

  When Earl Shaffer published "Walking with Spring" it was a long time after his
  1948 hike. His first attempt was to self-publish and then later the ATC helped
  to do a reprint of his original. So the answer isn't "Earl".

  What was the first book, published widely, to contain an account of hiking the
  entire Appalachian Trail?

  The Rodale 2-volume set was issued in 1975.

  Earl's book was published privately in 1981. My copy is the ATC version from
  1983.

  Sutton, Ann & Myron "The Appalachian Trail: Wilderness on the Doorstep" was
  published in 1967... So perhaps Sutton?

  Curiously, RockDancer (who now has time to ask questions now that he's back home
  in Mass.)
