I strongly suspect that his security staff and a few key figures knew 
exactly where the governor was but kept quiet on his request.  And I 
would be surprised - despite what the story intimates - if at least one 
security agent was not with or near the governor with the ability to 
instantly communicate with whoever he needed. 

With today's media sharks, the reality is that if he had told everyone 
where he was going, there would have been an entourage of reporters 
dogging him asking if he was getting the relaxation he wanted!  And I 
suspect he is cutting his hike short because, now that it is out, you 
can bet there are reporters waiting at the "next road crossing" to 
"question" him.

I commend the governor both for going hiking, and for taking steps to 
ensure that the trail was not overrun with a gaggle of reporters and 
cameramen getting a shot of the governor's "solitude".
