[at-l] Wet shoes

Thanks, everyone....My suspicions are confirmed: there's nothing that can be done about it. They're just plain going to smell like moldy old shoes that have gotten wet and stayed wet. Same with the orthotics/insoles.... they're just gonna smell moldy and icky no matter what. They won't deteriorate (the orthotics), they'll just stink. P-yew.

Can't use those Sneaker Balls things 'cause they smell good and bears would come looking to see what smells good. I like bears as well as the next person but I don't want to bring 'em around sniffing my shoes.

I've got my shoes sitting with half an inch of baking soda in them now. They stink.

MacGyver

>OK, you're hiking in pouring rain and your shoes are soaked. Your orthotics are soaked. You can put on dry socks but your shoes >and insoles are still soaked. You hike the rest of the day. There is no way your shoes and orthotics/insoles can dry overnight so you >wear them damp the next day. Now they stink, really really bad. And they're going to get wet again next time it rains.

Yes.
And what is your point?
;-)

>I've thought about putting plastic bags over my socks inside my shoes on rainy days, which would keep my socks and feet dry, but >my shoes and orthotics will still be soaked. They're gonna get moldy or something.

No, don't do that. You'll prune nonetheless.

>What do we do about this? The events described above are the true experiences of the author :-)? I?walked in?pouring rain for 40 >minutes two days ago and finally, this evening, turned a hair dryer on my shoes. Obviously that's a home solution, not a Trail solution.

There's not a whole lot to do on the trail if its raining, wet, slushy, muddy or dew-drenched. Have I forgotten anything? Oh yes, slipping off a rock during a stream crossing, LOL.

I had a couple of pairs of shoes delaminate in the Wet year of '03. Mud was my downfall. Mud everywhere in VA and PA and VT.

Best that can be done is stuff the shoes with newspaper when you get to a motel room, and place them on the register.
;-)
No worries. It'll be great!

>MacGyver
>(who should be able to think of something but this one can't be fixed with duct tape....)?

Save the duct tape for when you toe-bumper tears and the shoes delaminate.
;-)))
