"The Cumberland County Historical Society still has slots open April 11
for both 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. guided tours of the Camp Michaux site in
Cooke Township near Pine Grove Furnace State Park.

Tour groups should meet at Pine Grove Furnace and, from there, will
drive two miles to the location of Camp Michaux. Guide David Smith will
take participants through the site and show them what remains of
activities from the 18th century to the 1970s.

Camp Michaux began as a farm providing food to workers at Pine Grove
Furnace. From 1933 to 1942, 100 acres of the farm were selected to be a
Civilian Conservation Corps camp.

In 1942, the Army selected Camp Michaux as the site for a top-secret
interrogation center for German and Italian prisoners of war, including
members of the Nazi Party and the SS. Japanese prisoners were included
later in the war.

From 1947 to 1972, the Presbyterian Church and the United Church of
Christ leased the land as a summer church camp. The state found no other
uses for the camp, and in 1975 it was dismantled.

To participate, register with the historical society by calling
249-7610. Advance payment will reserve a spot on the tour. The cost is
$6 for non-members and $5 for members. The walk is rain or shine. Heavy
shoes or boots and long trousers are recommended."
