There is much more than that. I once computed it at about 50 miles. There
are hundreds of road crossings at 40-50 ft each and a number of fairly long
bridges, Bear Mt, DWG, Susquahana, etc.

There is a little stretch of the AT that is paved that I know of.  Its at
Pinnacles Picnic Ground in Shenandoah NP.  Maybe 50 yards long alongside one
of the parking areas.  There's a nice sign-board there telling something
about the AT.

I hope that this is a joke.

OTOH, we have predicted something like this would happen to parts of the 
trail, some time in the 21st century.  I'd hoped it would wait until I was
out 
of here.
