I'm sure I bitched and moaned about stuff when I backpacked as a kid,  
but as soon as I got out of the house I couldn't wait to go on my  
own.  The big Xmas present I got, freshman year of college, was my  
first backpack that was really mine.  And the next gifting occasion I  
asked for a sleeping bag.  :)

Good for you for taking him backpacking, and good for him for doing it  
on his own!
