[at-l] Question #1 - sticks

I've been using a pair of REI Komperdell hiking poles for many years, maybe as many as ten. Never had any trouble with them. They're so old that the paint is about all worn off. I like them because they're collapsible and thus easier to pack or stick somewhere in the car or for air travel. They theoretically have a "shock absorbent" function that is a side benefit of the collapsing feature. I've never figure out that that's worth anything. The one tiny drawback to the collapsible feature is that they will over time during a hike loosen up. I've only had it happen once or twice, but when you're doing something that you really need them to *not* collapse (like crossing a stream for example) you will want to make sure they're good and tight.
Good luck. :)

  Subject: [at-l] Question #1 - sticks

I'll start with this one. I tore up a pair of REI trek poles back in August that I've had several years. Took them in to be replaced, silly me, did not make sure before leaving the store that they were functional. One is not, won't tighten up.

So, tomorrow I will be returning these brand new sticks. I've been told I should seriously look at Black Diamond and Leki's before getting another REI pair.

My gear experience has been very much limited to what REI has for sale. Time to expand my horizons!

What do you think? What sticks do you like and why?
  Thanks!
  Tortoise
