If you think the poles aren't doing anything on the flats, I was
convinced otherwise. While hiking the Finger Lakes Trail
in NY I hit a section of close to 30 straight miles of road walking
(split over three days). Left town one morning on "flat"
road, didn't like the noise of the poles on the pavement, so I started
just carrying them. A mile late my legs were asking
what the heck was going on...

I recall all of one person using two poles in '92, never met him but
saw his divots all the way up the trail. He hadn't checked
out the page Mara cited for proper use ;-)

I wish they had been out, my knees would be in better shape now!
