Hiking isn't necessarily foolishness. Even an experienced hiker who knows
the risk can get into trouble they can't get out of alone.True that you
shouldn't be out there without knowing the risks. The problem is
inexperienced people who know the risks and rely on rescue in place of
common sense and know how. An electronic locater shouldn't be considered the
backcountry equivalent of Staples "Easy Button" and if you are are using it
that way, you should expect to pay for the services of those who come to
rescue your sorry butt. I'm a certified S&R person and I will happily answer
the call to find a lost person who's made an honest mistake or been caught
in unforeseen situation but I think that using Spot or any of the other
personal locaters in place of being properly prepared is inexcusable abuse
of those who put themselves at risk to perform rescues.
