If I meet a horse on the trail, I'm goin up hill. If the horse spooks, it's tough for it to fall up hill and land on me. If the horse goes your way, you lose.

But often, downhill isn't an option
for hikers who meet horses. The one time I was hiking with some folks and
we met horses in the Smokies, the other side of the trail went straight
down. One of my partners was a horse trainer, and she got us all lined out
right. She was hugely worried about one of the horses, though, because she
said that he was in stress, but I've forgotten the word she used. It was a
