[at-l] Dog solutions?

Hey all.  Almost time to go, but I've got a nagging little issue brewing.
I've taken both my dogs to different family members to stay while I take my
chance at the AT, one situation is not working out as well as I had hoped.
Too soon to say, could all be just fine, still I would like to be a bit
prepared in case this just doesn't work out.

Do you have a dog?  What did you do with him/her while you hiked?  Did
someone care for it while you hiked?  Did you take it along?  What are the
challenges and what solutions did you find?

I'm asking staight out here for any ideas you may have on how best to care
for a dog while on the trail.
