I hiked with a cell phone that was off most of the time. I used it for phone calls during snow storms, and to call for rental cars from road crossings. No text, no data plan, not on. Carry what you want, don't let some jack ass tell u what to do.

It all depends on what you're into. Wife and I both have phones with data plans and text packages. $170.00 for all that with two lines. But we dumped cable, which we weren't even using. We may yet dump standard internet, because both of our phones are 3G and tetherable.

I looked at getting a "smart phone" but found out I need to get a "data plan" ont op of the usual monthly fees and texting is extra on top of that. Data and texting are separate from the 700 minutes I'm already buying for my dumb phone and using less than 100 of. All told they wanted me to buy the phone then pay them $180/month plus taxes and assorted fees. NOT!

The Brigade looks pretty good.  Anyone out there use it?  It weighs 5.5 oz; my current phone weighs 4.3 oz.
