Labor Day Weekend is stressful, even in the Whites. The number of AT hikers was down from the previous week but they weren't the older, slower, more injured hikers. Some were the partying type, traveling in groups, and doing surges in the good stretches of weather. Not much bad weather but the hints are there for coming colder, wetter and even thicker weather on the horizon.
As Felix indicated there is always the potential at this time of years. "Hiked from Garfield to N. Woodstock...
lost Stoat AND Pokey in the process. Sleet, rain, wind,
mud...cold... classic hypothermia conditions."
Sat Sept. 4 to Tuesday Sept. 8:
Jaybird (perennial thruhiker since 2005, did 2 other AT's in the 90's.)
Big Fork & Little Spoon
Dutch Tape & Cabana Boy (hiking this year & doing trail magic)
Slow Go & Not Yet (Quebec hikers doing a section)
?? John (didn't get the whole name)
Buck minus Bard (Bard was his dog, sent home I guess)
Rip van Winkle
Laura & Mike (these last 7 are surge hiking it seems, arriving about 9 PM at Crawford Notch)
This last trip was funded by the "Hat Fund" - donations from those who wanted fleece hiker hats last winter. $150 was generated for the hikers this year. It was a great help in defraying costs for all sodas, chips, bologna sandwiches, etc. and the hikers certainly appreciated it!
