I think this was dingoes, in Australia (North east Australia), and the woman spent time in prison, before it was generally accepted that yes, dingoes *will* take infant humans to their pack for dinner....

Several years ago, there was a 
vacationing family in some mountains in the North East where the mother left the 
baby in a stroller on the porch while she ran inside to get a last-minute 
item.  A bear took the baby and killed it.  Do you know where that 
was?  What kind of bear?  a'bear, who seem to have a vested interest 
in this  <G>
