Rusty Bumper aka John Abbott had to be helicoptered off of Chairback
Mountain just 85 miles short of his Katahdin destination because of a
broken leg. He slipped while descending a steep section of the AT
when he heard the bones in his leg snap. He was able to use his cell
phone to call home and later to offer GPS location to rescue
personnel. He has been posting on TrailJournals. I heard of the
rescue on a newsbroadcast over a Maine TV station. Do you remember
following the hike of "Polly and Ester" several years back when one
of them broke her arm toward the end of their hike right near Abol
Bridge.
