The is from today's Rutland VT newspaper website:
http://www.rutlandherald.com/article/20120217/THISJUSTIN/702179937. It made
me wonder why the guy was anywhere near the place when firefighters arrived.
Maybe it's a firebug thing to watch the blaze. --RD
Charges brought in trail shelter fire
Federal prosecutors have charged a New Hampshire man with burning down a
shelter in the Green Mountain National Forest in Mendon.
The Tucker Johnson Trail Shelter, located on the Long Trail just north of
the intersection with the Appalachian Trail, was destroyed by flames on
March 2, 2011.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Vermont said Thursday that Justin Caissie, of
Manchester, N.H., and formerly from Rutland, lit the fire and later gave a
false statement to a U.S. Forest Service special agent by claiming that the
shelter had already been destroyed by the time he arrived there.
If convicted, Caissie faces up to 10 years in jail on the charges.
A U.S. Forest Service official said Thursday that the agency is talking with
Green Mountain Club representatives about design options for a new shelter.
No date has been set for construction to begin.
