[at-l] at-l Digest, Vol 66, Issue 3

I met a number of the folks who post to this site when I went to the PA Ruck prior to my AT hike in 2009.  They provided me with a wealth of information and support.  The "Tuckerization" of my pack was an eye-opener, and the enthusiasm about long distance back-packing was infectious. I continue to read the at-l because the postings are thoughtful, insightful, witty, confusing, entertaining, and most importantly factual and informative.

PS.... I've enjoyed your posts Jacko.  Will look forward to reading your logs on Trail Journals.

Very well put, Big Cranky.
So much of 'net sites are the proverbial sip from the firehose, including this one, back in the day. Do you want to know about the cdt? head to the cdt-l, which has outstripped the at-l by multiples! ("Huh! Who knew!" Who would've *imagined*! Well -- RYAN.)
Yeah, the at-l is more like a graceful piped spring of information, now. There are thousands of AT miles here -- perhaps just waiting for your question, Mr. Swift. You can't move but bump into a 2,000 miler.... and a few multies, and triple-crowners, and sectioneers and maintainers with more AT lore than my house has dust.
(And my house HAS dust.)

This list was the only online presence for AT hikers in, say, the mid-90s. So it was very active then. It's not as active now, and I suppose most of the remaining folks have been here a while. So there is not much in the way of "actual content" if you define that as questions and answers about hiking the trail, what gear to carry, that sort of thing. I suppose it's all migrated to Whiteblaze and then to Facebook, alas.?

Depending on what you are looking for, you can either ask here -- there is still an amazing wealth of AT-related knowledge among the listers -- or go over to Whiteblaze and brave the trolls. (Not entirely true, there is some good info there, too.)

I suppose "why" I read this list is mostly inertia and good memories, truth be told.?

This is the list that got me started, got me thinking about thru hiking back in the 90's.  These are the people that
I met at hiker gatherings, who talked to me, supported me and helped me up the trail in 2003.  This is family...
It has a history....  Not the same if you are just joining, it has evolved over the years, but still has a lot of knowledge lurking, waiting for questions...

I decided right then that this was the place for me.? Learned everything I know about recreational backpaking (The military showed me how to do it with folks shootin at ya) from this s ite.? There are folks here that can answer any question you ask.? If you want to do it the Right way, I can tell ya that >))

I'm not one of the longtimers here.
I have essentially "lurked" for a couple of years, occasionally learning stuff and sometimes enjoying humour, although most of it is obviously based on times people have been together in the past so you only get a hint of what's going on.
>From my observations there are many very knowledgeable people on this list.
However it is "old tech" and as a resource it therefore is more limited than something like Facebook.
I am somewhat "old tech" myself and don't "do" Facebook.
But I have enjoyed much of what comes through here and want to stay linked.
Having said all that I will be unsubscribing at the end of February for about 7 months as I do my own AT hike. NOBO 22nd March 2013.
This is to keep my email account more manageable while I hike.
I will post a link to my Trail Journal page when it becomes active later this month.
